TIFATA LEGNAMI: Embracing Industry 4.0 in a Small Woodworking Company
2022
The Challenge
Tifata Legnami is a small, family-run woodworking business that has been operating for over 30 years. The company specializes in processing and reselling timber, semi-finished wood products, and accessories for the furniture, construction, and building industries.
In 2021, Tifata Legnami took a decisive step toward digital transformation by upgrading its machinery with a new BIESSE panel saw, taking advantage of the fiscal incentives offered under the Italian “Transition Plan 4.0”. This strategic investment marked the beginning of their collaboration with Orchestra.
The Solution: SMARTCONNECTION by Orchestra
To support its transition to smart manufacturing, Tifata Legnami implemented SMARTCONNECTION, the innovative job management software developed by BIESSE in partnership with Retuner, and installed by Orchestra.
The solution enabled the full digital interconnection of the new BIESSE machine with existing equipment and the company’s IT infrastructure. Prior to this, Tifata Legnami relied solely on basic accounting software for invoices and delivery notes.
To meet their specific needs, the company adopted the MES module of SMARTCONNECTION, a version tailored by Orchestra specifically for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the wood industry that have not yet embraced digital factory solutions.
The installation phase was accompanied by an in-depth consultation process. This allowed Tifata Legnami to identify operational challenges, while Orchestra delivered a fully customized software solution aligned with the company’s production workflow.
The Benefits of Industry 4.0 Integration
Six months after the implementation, Tifata Legnami successfully integrated Industry 4.0 principles into its daily operations.
SMARTCONNECTION now manages not only production processes but also pre-production phases, allowing for near-instant, highly accurate quotes. These estimates take into account both the required raw materials and the expected labor and production output—greatly enhancing cost control and efficiency.
In the production phase, SMARTCONNECTION communicates directly with machinery. It starts with an interconnected forklift that identifies and retrieves the necessary materials from the warehouse. The workflow then proceeds through various machine operations, all synchronized and tracked in real-time, ensuring that every production cycle is fully completed and optimized.
At the end of the process, the original job order serves both as the basis for customer invoicing and as a complete record of the work performed.
“A true innovation leap that changed our daily life,” says Alberto Dello Stritto, representing the third generation now leading the company.
